ZerΟ food waste
Enhancing contingency knowledge and producing new effective instruments for minimising FLW
Vision.
To improve the understanding of how social norms influence behaviour and Food Loss & Waste (FLW) generation and to use this knowledge to increase the effectiveness of decision-making and engagement of food chain actors, in changing social norms towards zero food waste.

The challenge.
An extensive number of actions to prevent/reduce Food Loss & Waste (FLW) have been identified covering retail, food services and consumption at home. However, quantitative impact data to guide decision making is limited.
In order to address this lack of evidence, the scope of FLW has to be further broadened and deepened. In addition, the link between social norms, corporate behavior and FLW remains unexplored.

Approach & solutions.
To address this challenge, CHORIZO will use Agent Based Models (ABMs) to simulate at different scales several consumers, decision-makers and their interactions, and will focus on analysing change in dynamic contexts (e.g. social norms).
- Gathering & sensemaking of existing evidence on previous FLW actions
- Providing Open Access to the EU FLW Prevention hub
- Generating new evidence and understanding on social norms, behaviour & FLW
- Developing an FLW Datahub (Chorizo FLW Insighter)
- Using new insight to provide services to corporate actors pursuing FLW prevention activities
The project will utilise advanced modelling techniques to produce solutions that incorporate behavioural and economic theories, as well as gender and intersectional analyses, in order to evaluate social norm and behavioural data and effectively design innovation processes and outcomes.
It will also establish open & social innovation as a horizontal facilitator to address complex problems that require social change.
Use Cases
Implementing real-life case studies to provide empirical data.
CHORIZO will implement six Case Studies to overcome shortcomings of the evidence-based analysis associated to the use of secondary data.
