The challenge.
Over the years, significant effort has been invested in the creation of Safety Frameworks; however, in order to implement such frameworks efficiently across the EU, innovative data capturing solutions are needed. Current frameworks focus on private vehicles, neglecting the safety needs of all road users, particularly with the rise of micro-mobility. To continue, The EU encourages unified approaches for measuring safety-related Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), but further investigation is required. Also, the road inspection process, especially for secondary and local roads, is labor-intensive and costly and demands effective methodologies to expedite detection of infrastructure deterioration. On another note, there is a strong need for reliable communication and dynamic assessment to integrate Cooperative, Connected, and Automated Mobility (CCAM) services safely. The increase in VRUs demands understanding of user behaviors and solutions promoting safe mobility. Last but not least, the lack of specific data hinders evidence-based safety metrics and identification of suitable measures for road maintenance sites.

Approach & solutions.
To address this challenge, EvoRoads defines safety criteria and KPIs quantification methodologies covering the entire spectrum of the “Safe System” approach and develops a connectivity platform where transport infrastructure assets are digitalised and safety assessment services are functioning in a harmonious way.
The connectivity platform will include:
- Consolidation of primary criteria into composite multi-criteria clusters.
- Methodologies to measure key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Digital representation of physical and cyber infrastructure assets.
- Post-impact assessment analysis.
- Dynamic infrastructure black-spot definition.
- Predictive maintenance and repair analysis tool.
- ISAD level evaluation and connectivity coverage analysis.
- Infrastructure deterioration detection solution.
- Multi-vehicle\modal sensor fusion.
- Situational aware traffic management alerting tool.
- AI-based models.
Advanced AI-driven analytics will be developed for fusing infrastructure monitoring data at different geospatial resolutions, realising proactive risk warning services and supporting road operators in maintenance management.
Pilots
The EvoRoads approach is validated at 7 distinct locations in Spain, Italy, Latvia and Romania, addressing different types of infrastructure settings and road users.
EvoRoads will implement a wide range of data and technologies to achieve its goals, conducting real-world evaluations in four European countries: Spain, Italy, Latvia, and Romania. The latter three, which are among the countries with the highest road fatality rates in Europe, will benefit from the best practices derived from Spain.
